Frequently asked questions
No, not every motorcycle can be legally restricted to 48 PS (35 kW). For a motorcycle to be restricted for the A2 licence, several conditions must be met: the unrestricted power, performance must not exceed 70 kW (approx. 95 PS) and a suitable restrictor kit with a certificate or component type approval (TTG) must be available for your motorcycle model.
At alphatechnik.de, you will find a large selection of power reductions for many motorcycle models! Typical motorcycles that can be restricted in this way include the Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Z650, Suzuki SV650 and the Honda CB650R.
Depending on the motorcycle model, the restriction is achieved electronically via the ECU, a throttle stop, an intake restrictor plate, or a combination of these.
Not every 'technically possible' restriction is legal. A certificate or component type approval (TTG), a TÜV registration, and the correct power, performance listed in the vehicle documents are essential.
Are you wondering: how much PS can a motorcycle have to be restricted? For the A2 licence, a motorcycle can be restricted to 35 kW (48 PS) if its unrestricted power is a maximum of 70 kW, which is about 95 PS.
The rule is: the unrestricted power, performance must not be more than double the restricted power, performance. For example, the Yamaha MT-07 (~73 PS), Kawasaki Z650 (~68 PS) and the Honda CB650R (~95 PS) are permitted for an A2 restriction.
A restriction of this kind would not be possible for bikes like a BMW S 1000 RR (~210 PS) or a Yamaha YZF-R1 (~200 PS).
Important: the restriction must be legally registered. After installation, you normally need a certificate or component type approval (TTG).
At alphatechnik.de, you will find a large selection of power reductions for many motorcycle models, and you are welcome to contact us with any questions.
Are you wondering: can I restrict a motorcycle myself? Or: can I restrict my motorcycle on my own? Theoretically, the restrictor kit can be installed by yourself.
However, acceptance by a technical service is crucial. A restriction is only legal in Germany (and throughout the EU) if an approved restrictor kit with a certificate or component approval is used, the installation is carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions, followed by an inspection by a technical service, and the modification is registered in the vehicle documents.
If you are not sure, it is best to have the restrictor kit installed by a trusted workshop!
The cost of restricting a motorcycle to 35 kW (A2) varies depending on the model and the type of restriction.
Typical total costs: usually around €250-700.
Restrictor kit: approx. €100–400 (depends on your motorcycle model and the type of restriction), Installation (workshop): approx. €100–300, TÜV/DEKRA inspection + registration: approx. €50–120.
For a bike like the Yamaha MT-07 or Kawasaki Z650, for example, the total costs often amount to ~€300–500, including installation.
Please note: without TÜV registration, the restriction is not legal! Reverting to unrestricted power, performance later will cost a similar amount again.
It is not harmful to restrict a motorcycle to 35 kW (A2) — as long as it is done professionally and is intended for the specific model.
A power reduction is unproblematic if you obtain an original kit directly from the manufacturer or a certified supplier such as alpha Technik, and the kit is ideally installed by a workshop according to the specifications.
This is how it works if you want to have a motorcycle restricted to 35 kW (A2): first, you need to check if your motorcycle is suitable (unrestricted power, performance max. 70 kW / 95 PS for A2) and if there is an approved restrictor kit available for your model.
At alphatechnik.de, you will find a large selection of power reductions for many motorcycle models.
Then you can either fit, mount, install the restrictor kit yourself or entrust the installation to a trusted workshop – we recommend the latter option!
After installation, you must take it to the TÜV or DEKRA, where they will check if everything has been installed correctly. The 35 kW power output will then be entered into the vehicle documents - only then is the motorcycle officially A2-compliant.
Now you can inform your insurance company that the power, performance has changed!
