Öhlins TTX Road & Track KA 128 shock absorber, rear mono shock, gas-pressure damper with fixed, externa reservoir ("Piggy Back"); adjustable rebound damping, adjustable compression dampingndämfung; externa hydraulic spring preload adjuster; PLEASE NOTE: Illustrated shock absorber protector is not included in delivery, piston diameter 36 mm; with component approval for Kawasaki ZZ-R 1400, model year 2006-2020General description
Cavitation is devastating for a shock absorber, as it means the loss of damping and thus something you definitely do not want to experience in your shock absorber. The small bubbles that form in the oil during cavitation can never support the desired damping properties of your shock absorber.Traditionally constructed dampers can easily fall victim to cavitation under extreme conditions due to the low pressure behind the piston.
The TTX system was designed by Öhlins development engineers to prevent the risk of cavitation in the shock absorber. The plan worked. Thanks to a clever pressure balance of the TTX technology, the risk of cavitation could be eliminated from the shock absorber.
The “TT” stands for “Twin Tube”, i.e. the twin-tube design, while the “X” in the designation describes the flow direction or the arrangement of the valves in the cylinder head of the TTX shock absorber.
Thanks to TTX technology, the pressure that normally builds up directly above the piston is directed towards the cylinder head and to the adjusters for compression and rebound damping.
After that, it enters the free space between the inner and outer tube to the opposite side of the piston. All this happens so quickly thanks to ingenious boreholes and well-thought-out channel guidance that one can almost speak of a balanced pressure ratio on both sides of the piston.
The reservoir of the TTX damper is only used when the shock absorber compresses and extends, either to absorb the oil expanded by heat or the oil displaced by the piston shaft, or to return it to the circuit. In the reservoir, there is a separating piston between the damper oil and the nitrogen located on the other side of the separating piston. The gas generates an oil pressure of six to nine bar, which basically corresponds to the static pressure on both sides of the main piston.
In addition to use in shock absorbers, Öhlins also relies on TTX technology in the construction of front wheel forks and cartridge kits. As is already known from Öhlins, the TTX technology was also first introduced in the racing sector after long test series to win races and championships there under extreme conditions.
Just two years after its introduction in racing, TTX technology was available for purchase by everyone. After its great success in sport and with supersport and superbike motorcycles for the street, the development has now also found its way into the field of dual-sport motorcycles and adventure touring bikes. TTX technology is also ready for use in mechatronic segment systems.
