General description

Cavitation is devastating for a shock absorber, as it means the loss of damping, and therefore something you definitely do not want to experience in your shock absorber.
The small bubbles that form in the oil during cavitation can never support the desired damping characteristic of your shock absorber.

Traditionally constructed dampers can easily fall victim to cavitation under extreme conditions due to the low pressure behind the piston.

The TTX system was designed by Öhlins development engineers to prevent the risk of cavitation in the shock absorber. The plan succeeded. Thanks to the sophisticated pressure balance of the TTX technology, the risk of cavitation was eliminated from the shock absorber.

The “TT” stands for “Twin Tube”, i.e. the twin-tube design, while the “X” in the designation describes the flow direction, or the arrangement of the valves in the cylinder head of the TTX shock absorber.
Thanks to TTX technology, the pressure that normally builds up directly above the piston is directed towards the cylinder head and to the adjusters for compression damping and rebound damping.

It then enters the free space between the inner and outer tube on the opposite side of the piston. All this happens so quickly, thanks to ingenious bores and well-thought-out channel routing, that one can almost speak of a balanced pressure ratio on both sides of the piston.

The reservoir of the TTX damper is only used when the shock absorber compresses and extends to either accommodate the oil expanded by heat or the oil displaced by the piston shaft, or to return it to the circulation. A separating piston is located in the reservoir between the damper oil and the nitrogen on the other side of the separating piston. The gas generates an oil pressure of six to nine bar, which essentially corresponds to the static pressure on both sides of the main piston.

In addition to its use in shock absorbers, Öhlins also relies on TTX technology in the construction of front wheel and cartridge kits. As is well known from Öhlins, TTX technology was also first introduced in the racing sector after long test series to win races and championships under extreme conditions.
Just two years after its introduction in racing, TTX technology was available for purchase by everyone. Following its great success in sport and with supersport and superbike motorcycles for street, the development has now also entered the realm of dual-sport motorcycles and adventure touring bikes. TTX technology is also equipped for use in segment.
